Uniform

On board, each employee receives their own personal uniform.

The day or evening uniform must be worn as per manual, this means, for example, that shirts are not to be worn over trousers.

The uniform will be cleaned and ironed free of charge, but it is the employee's responsibility to ensure that it is always clean and ironed.

With Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and Phoenix Reisen there are sometimes exceptions and the uniform will be sent to the employees in advance. Depending on the ship, it may be necessary to bring a suit, white shirts and ties.

The name badge must always be worn visibly on the left side of your chest. It is not permitted to wear the uniform on private occasions, especially when leaving the ship (free time).

Shoes

Every employee must ensure that they have a neat, black pair of shoes in their luggage. These are worn with the evening uniform. For excursions, black, comfortable sneakers with black soles (all-black shoes) are recommended to be worn with the day uniform.

Dealing with Guests

Service-oriented, friendly, but also politely distanced interaction with Guests is expected.

The guests spend their most important time of the year on board: their vacation. Our goal is to make this time as relaxing as possible for them.

Smoking is not permitted in front of the Guests (even during breaks or after excursions) and the use of your personal mobile phone in front of the Guests is also not appropriate.

Intimate contact with Guests is strictly forbidden. Even if the initiative may come from the Guest, absolute restraint is the top priority. Small talk yes - nothing more!

Safety on board

Each crew member fulfills an assigned task in the event of an emergency on board and, if necessary, during safety drills for the Guests.

After your arrival on board, the Safety Officer will inform you about your responsibilities and duties in numerous training sessions. These training sessions are usually held in English.

Working time

Your work week on board is to be considered as a 7-day week. The film and photo manager coordinates the work schedules and assigns you the duties accordingly. The work day consists of 8-10 hours a day with appropriate rest periods. In general, the working hours are designed so that the Guests can enjoy maximum attention, service and care.

Hygiene on board

Every employee is expected to pay attention to their personal hygiene and grooming. As a rule, men must shave or wear a well-groomed short beard and women must tie their hair up.

Washrooms with washing machines and dryers are available for independent use; you can bring your own washing powder or buy it en route. In some cases, washing powder is already available on board. In addition, you can hand in your laundry in the laundry on board, which can be washed at the crew price. Your uniform will be washed and ironed on board free of charge.

Crew areas

There are separate areas on board for the Crew such as Crew Mess and Staff Mess,or Officers' mess for Hapag Lloyd Cruises.

Crew bar (smoking bar): In the crew bar you can round off the evening, there is always something going on here.

Alcohol, drugs and partying

Every Crew member must adhere to the alcohol and drug policies on board, which are laid down by TUI Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and Phönix.

The general rule is: No drugs!

The consumption of alcohol during working hours is also strictly prohibited. No one is allowed to start working under the influence of alcohol. There are regular alcohol and drug checks on board!

Failure to comply with these regulations will result in premature termination of the contract. You must leave the ship directly at the next port and fly home.

Cabins

The cabin situation varies depending on the fleet and ship. On most ships you have a cabin to yourself alone. The bathroom is sometimes shared with the person next to you.

Internet

Each Crew member is given an access with which the internet usage is precisely registered.

There is an extra Wi-Fi network for the crew, which can be used for an additional charge, Whatsapp and social media are often free of charge, but this can vary depending on the shipping company. This is automatically deducted from your on-board account.

Telephone

Of course you can also make phone calls on board. Please note that the costs are comparatively high. NOR 18 is one of the emergency networks on the high seas. In most cases, this is dialed automatically. You may also be able to purchase a special telephone card on board. All calls you make from your cell phone at sea or in non-European countries can also be very expensive.

Television

In the crew cabins you usually have a television where you can receive the same program as in the guest cabins.

Post

Of course you can also send post on board. You can leave stamped letters and postcards with the crew purser so that they can besent at the next opportunity.

If you would like to receive mail (letters and parcels) on board, ask your supervisor for the addresses to which they can be sent.

Crew ID

Your Crew ID is also your credit card on board.

This card identifies you and is a mean of payment on the ship. Please make sure that you can pay your bill either in cash or by registering your credit card (not prepaid). To prevent misuse, it is mandatory for all crew members to carry this card with them at all times. In some countries it is not possible to withdraw euros or dollars (means of payment on board). The fee can be paid to you on board in exceptional cases and with your express consent. If only smaller amounts are to be paid out, we can also release this shortly.
